So for a minute let us just imagine; you wake up in the morning and everywhere looks so spick and span, it smells so good here, it must be your favorite meal cooking. After getting dressed and taking your breakfast, on getting inside your car, all you have to do is relax all through the ride. Soothing right?

Also, imagine waking up to the news of war, everyone is scared. There is something killing people without control in the city; people have already lost their jobs to them, now this?

With artificial intelligence it can go either way, it could be useful or damaging to individuals in a society. Through this article, we will get to know what artificial intelligence is and try to understand the thought behind it. Let’s start right away.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is the ability of a computer program or a machine to acquire cognitive functions of the human mind, such as thinking, learning, and problem-solving. The name artificial intelligence was coined by John McCarthy in 1955.

Andreas Kaplan and Michael Heanlein define AI as a system’s ability to correctly interpret external data, to learn from such data and to use those learnings to achieve specific goals and tasks through flexible adaptation. Flexible adaptation in this context connotes that the machine should have the ability of perception; perceive its environment and take actions accordingly to attain success i.e. reaching its goal.

Artificial intelligence has been around for more than a decade, from the question asked by Alan Turing “I propose to consider the question can machines think?” In 1950. This question provoked the minds of people and they began to question how they can make that happen.

Artificial intelligence is used in different sectors and for different purposes. Basically, the purpose of artificial intelligence is problem-solving; the kind of artificial intelligence used or created is dependent on the problem that needs to be solved.

Other sectors which artificial intelligence is used includes the educational, medical even our social and day to day lives.

Medical Sector

There is a large amount of use of technology in the medical sector today. Medical records have been digitalized as doctors can’t store all the information about each of their patients in their memory. Initially, it was the use of paper files to keep a record, but those can get missing. Recently information about each patient is inputted into the system and obtained whenever it is needed.

Also, technology helps in fast and accurate diagnosis of patients. There is the use of computed tomography (CT) scanners which was introduced in 1971. Presently there is the use of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) to detect certain medical conditions.

Educational Sector

These days, individuals enroll in education online. Their progress is being tracked on a daily or weekly basis, depending on the system of the school, tests and assignments are given and interaction is made possible between students and lectures in the school.

This method has made it easier for individuals to acquire more qualification without living their environment or current jobs.

In the social sector, technology is a major part of our lives. For example the use of social media and applications, even our games. These social media applications such as Facebook and Instagram help us interact with people regardless of our location and time differences.

Also, we have game applications in which we play against the computer system if we want to. We find out that the completion between us and the system is stiff. These systems have been programmed and made to know the possible moves made in that particular game.

Artificial Intelligence is not something that will become extinct in the future, it is here to stay. AI has gradually penetrated into the lives of almost every individual in the world; from the use of the google, Siri, AlphaGo, and Alexa, our interaction with AI technologies in on an increase daily. The following are some examples of AI technology:

We should all be familiar with Siri offered on Apple’s iPhones and iPad. This is a pseudo-intelligent digital personal assistant which makes use of machine learning technology. This technology is used to better understand our natural language. Through this, it gets smarter as it tries to predict our questions and requests.
So how does it help us? Sometimes instead of going through numerous files in our device, we can simply ask Siri and within a few seconds, results are shown. Other functions include sending of messages, giving directions, adding of events to our calendar amongst others.

Apart from smartphones, automobiles have also drifted into artificial intelligence. Although other automobiles make use of AI, Telsa is the best invention yet. This automobile has predictive capabilities and self-driving features, it’s a total package for a car geek.

This application has gained recognition all over the world. It can predict an individual’s interest in movies by analyzing a large number of records based on previous movies watched by that individual and categories searched for. This technology is highly accurate and it is getting smarter as the dataset grows.

These are aircraft which fly without a human pilot, they are also referred to as Unmanned Ariel Vehicles (UAV). Drones are used for different purposes; in the entertainment sector, it is used for filming, capturing the aerial view of scenes. It is also used for survey, military and defense and emergency situations, among others.

Some of these drones are autonomous, they fly based on how they have been programmed and have adaptive features.

In conclusion, what do you think the next intriguing AI technology will be? Maybe an automobile that can transform into a mini house, a laptop that can help you type while you just speak or better still it predicts your thoughts based on the topic and types it out? Crazy right?

Yes, it might be crazy but innovation is what we drive for. What are you thinking of creating next? Get out that comfort zone and think! Who knows, you could invent the next greatest artificial intelligence technology.
